Organic Gardening

PYO = "Pick Your Own" For those of you looking of opportunities to gather some local fresh produce or tell others where to find it you can contact me or go to http://www.pickyourown.org/ to register your site no matter where you are or want to go to PYO.

Someone asked me if I was going to do PYO again this year. PYO is the way to go for veggie gardens and small farms. I want more co-op with my PYO people to process & can my veggies in trade to lower cost of food & seed.

I registered free for PYO on line last year and immediately got calls but did not have the garden up to speed to help very many locally or traveling through Sand Springs Oklahoma Southwest site where I have my gardens. I had the best results from fresh cucumbers and corn with some tomatoes, lettuce, and other crops.

I did some swapping for native pecans with Robert Monhollon. Robert takes time separating them from raked up bags of them I supplied him. He separated the mulch, hulls, and pecans during evenings in front of the wood fired stove warming his "organic" farm house.

I decided that I needed to expand my berries due to so many calls for them. I plan to pick up some thorn-less blackberry plants and seeds from Monhollon and hope to get some more friends on Facebook to help me expend the berry farm here and share the crops in trade for their help. It is all part of the co-operative (coop or co-op) spirit that is aided by Facebook groups and communication opportunities to get the word out about common interests or generating the pioneer spirit to get more people interested in worthwhile projects to improve their life and become more productive with their time and resources. Producing more "fruit" for their time and resources is not only helpful to provide better for our families, it improves our health, happiness, self-worth, and is fun for the whole family locally, even in this fast paced world of technology.

Last year I invested in a chest freezer to store my fresh veggies into frozen format because I did not have the time to can it conventionally. I have met many more gardeners that spend a lot of their time canning that have offered to help in that area while I spend my time digging, building, making improvements, and planting on my 1 acre farm and gardens. I saved a lot of seed last year too. Seed separation devices and techniques are another area I plan to improve here. I came up with several methods with materials on hand, mostly screen wire, to separate my seeds from the roughage but I learned the hard way of ways to dry, bag, and store the seeds. So much of what I learned was hands on with the Monhollon family who I visited frequently in the winter and fall to prepare for next season.

I started back into gardening in 2010 slowly just before I retired. My 1 acre homestead site that I moved to in 1973 has changed a lot since I started to landscape my land to retain, utilize, and store more rain water. The drought started in 2011 and may continue on till 2017 or beyond which presents a problem to local organic gardeners.
I am experimenting and learning a lot every year thanks to others, especially Robert and Elise Monhollon who have helped me the most so far.

I created a Facebook group that has really grown and helped to called “SandSpringsOK backyard gardener’s coop” at https://www.facebook.com/groups/BackyardGardenerCoop/ and have created other groups for similar or different local interests beginning with the name “SandSpringsOK” and similar world wide groups with names like “SolarSchool”. Check them out.

Organic Gardening - One of my Bucket List Items

Organic Gardening - One of my Bucket List Items
One of several items on my Bucket List was to develop a large and interesting Organic Garden on my 1 acre  farm property to help lower my cost of living, provide food for family, and help others with produce and a place to experiment, learn, and teach organic gardening.  Let's network locally and beyond for growing food not lawns.
